Throughout my working life, information and communicating that information has been of paramount importance to me. I worked for some years in the NHS in an Information and IT Department and I could never understand why so many people were reluctant to share information. By the time I took early retirement, the situation had changed to a certain extent but I feel it has not changed radically enough. We still dont have a seriously viable way of ensuring that all sections of the NHS throughout the country have access to a patients record in a way that ensures confidentiality, as well as giving the appropriate information at the time it is needed. But thats another story!
This is just a way of leading you into the subject of this article. Natural Energy, or Spiritual Healing, does not have a high profile. Reiki healing has gained much by spreading its teachings through a sort of, largely benign, pyramid selling technique. In many areas, Reiki healers can work their way quite quickly through the levels to become Reiki Masters and Teachers and, thus, pass the techniques on to others. It has worked extremely well in publicising the benefits of Reiki.
Spiritual healing is my great love but the nature of the healing is such that its practitioners, myself included, tend to work away quietly, almost in the background of society. I believe this may be why so many people are a little suspicious of this type of healing, quite apart from the fact that, to most people, nothing seems to be happening while the healing is being channelled. In comparison to some of the activities that go on when a Reiki healing is being given, spiritual healing is very uninteresting. For many of the people who can see the difference in their lives as a result of receiving spiritual healing, however that may manifest itself, they tend not to make a great fuss about it or may just mention it to a few close family or friends.
Its only when someone receives a radical, life-changing, healing that either they or someone else reports to a local paper or radio station that spiritual healing gains much attention from the public at large. This is fine, as far as I and, I believe, most other spiritual healers are concerned because we prefer the anonymity in many ways. However, it is not the way to promote the benefits of spiritual healing to a wider audience so that they think of seeking out a healer in the early stages of their condition rather than as a last resort. In addition, many healers are not the type of people to relish the spotlight in front of a group of people telling them what spiritual healing is and how it can help them.
So strong is my belief in communicating all of this as widely as possible, and probably as a result of my background in communication and information, that I have worked to overcome my natural lack of confidence and I will now talk to any group who will listen, and who wants to experience healing.
I recently gave a talk at St Nons Retreat, just outside of St Davids in Pembrokeshire to a SADS UK Group (Sudden Arrhythmia Death). They do pilgrimages periodically and this year they were staying at the Retreat and walking along the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path. As it turned out, it was during the coldest weather we had had in this part of the world for some time, but this didnt seem to be detracting from the pleasure of the stunning scenery and the enjoyment of seeing old friends again and making new ones.
The Retreat is perched atop the cliffs with stunning views out to sea over craggy rocks with the coastal path running along in front of the house. To one side, it has the tiniest chapel, no bigger than a large room of a house, which feels as if it really is intimately connected to the Divine.
There is a wonderfully atmospheric, oak-beamed conference room and the corridors are punctuated with typed sheets containing profound statements that are not overtly religious but very spiritual. The atmosphere at the Retreat is so welcoming, uplifting and inspiring; the three Sisters of Mercy who manage and run it have made it into a truly memorable place. The organiser of the pilgrimage said that the staff could not do enough for the members of the group and that the whole place was run with quiet and loving efficiency.
A friend had asked me a few months ago if I would come and talk to the group, which comprised about twenty people from all over the UK. I thought it would be a group that could benefit greatly from healing, and decided to offer short healing sessions after the talk.
My talk covered as much of a description of healing as I can offer as I explained, its something you have to experience, and is certainly not a spectator sport, unless you particularly enjoy activities like watching paint dry! I then went on to talk about how we can heal ourselves including strategies such as keeping our thoughts as positive as possible, being aware of what we think and say and how it affects our environment, loving and accepting our physical body, and having the intent to heal ourselves, whether we are working with a healer or not.
I encouraged audience participation in breathing through the stomach to promote release of tension and relaxation, both at that moment and in our daily lives. As always, the whole group seemed to participate but a large number of them had great difficulty in breathing in this way. However, it certainly gave them pause for thought and I hope that theyre still trying to practise it regularly!
To my amazement, most of the group decided they would like to try a healing session, which meant that, as it was about 8.30pm when we started, each person would have quite a short session. However, I felt that at least they would experience the calm and serenity that the healing would offer, if it did nothing else in the short time available. I relaxed into the session and thoroughly enjoyed meeting each person, talking to them a little and channelling the energies.
They were all delighted with the sessions and the organiser of the pilgrimage told me, as she bid me farewell at about 11.30pm, that everyone was in a very relaxed mood in the lounge and looked set to open a few bottles of wine and chill out. So, I drove away feeling that I had achieved what I had wished and thought no more about this over the weekend.
The next week I received an email from the organiser saying how much they had enjoyed the talk. She said that the healing had produced some interesting results. One man, who was rather sceptical about the whole thing but who had decided to give it a go, had awoken at 4.00am the following morning with intense tingling first on one side of his body and then the other and witnessed an amazing array of vivid coloured lights in geometric shapes. She said he was quite blown away by the experience.
A lady who I had apparently said I thought had challenges around her solar plexus area, was sick in the night which forced her to relax all day in bed at the Retreat and feel a lot of very troubled emotions. By the evening she was, however, fine and felt very relaxed and peaceful. Other people too had various reactions disappearance of long-term pain, changes in attitude and appearance, and so forth.
Pondering on this later, I realised that all the work Ive done on myself, through reading, learning, observing people and, most importantly, practising healing as often as possible, and progressively becoming better at letting go of the outcomes of healing, have made a huge difference in how effective a channel I am.
Hopefully the people from the SADS Group who gained some benefit from the healing will now contact a healer locally (I gave them information to help them with this) and will tell others about its effects in their local area.
I am sure many healers are going through, or have gone through, the same emotions and doubts as I have sometimes wondering whether the healing is truly coming through, whether I am approaching people in a way that is as compassionate and loving as they need, and numerous other (fairly unhelpful) thoughts. The very fact that these people experienced so much from this healing session confirms to me that, firstly, I am a relaxed and, therefore, open channel but also, and just as important, these people felt relaxed enough to absorb those energies, even the sceptics. As healers, we have to ensure that we put people at their ease because it is as much our responsibility as that of the patient to ensure that they are relaxed, so that healing can take place in a supportive environment that enables the release of tension.
Sometimes it take a situation like this where you get some kind of confirmation that youre on the right track to give a real boost to your activities as a healer. However, I am not minimising the effect of the extraordinary environment in which we were working at St. Nons. Its a wonderful and welcoming place for a healer, the patients and Spirit why wouldnt we have some stunning results?
